OP MAPLE (IPPERWASH)

12.(U) ON WEDNESDAY, 6 SEP. AT 1955 HOURS, A DISTURBANCE IN THE TOWNSHIP PROPERTY ADJACENT TO THE PARK WAS REPORTED TO THE OPP. A PRIVATE CITIZEN'S VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED BY A NUMBER OF NATIVES ARMED WITH BASEBALL BATS. THE OPP DEPLOYED ITS CROWD MANAGEMENT TEAM TO DISPERSE THE GROUP. AS THE CROWD WAS DISPERSING, OFFICERS WERE CONFRONTED BY NATIVES HURLING ROCKS AT THEM.

13.(U) AS THE OPP TEAM WAS LEAVING THE AREA, A SCHOOL BUS AND A VEHICLE DROVE THROUGH THE PROVINCIAL PARK FENCE STRIKING A DUMPSTER. THE BUS PUSHED THE DUMPSTER INTO THE TEAM AND THE OTHER VEHICLE DROVE INTO THE TEAM AS WELL. OCCUPANTS OF THOSE TWO VEHICLES FIRED UPON POLICE OFFICERS AND SUBSEQUENTLY, POLICE OFFICERS RETURNED FIRE. ONE NATIVE IS DEAD AND TWO OTHER SERIOUSLY INJURED. THE CIVILIAN SIU IS INVESTIGATING THE INCIDENT.

14(C) SINCE THE INCIDENT, MOST BUILDINGS IN THE PARK HAVE BEEN BURNED. A VEHICLE WAS ALSO SET ABLAZE. THE OPP HAVE RECEIVED NUMEROUS CALLS THREATENING OFFICERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF NATIVE ORIGIN. EVEN THOUGH THE NATIVES APPEAR TO BELIEVE THAT AN OPERATION IS UNDERWAY AGAINST THEM, THE OPP HAS NO IMMEDIATE OPERATION PLANNED.

15(C) THE OPP REPORTED THAT UP TO 100 ROUNDS OF SMALL ARMS AMMUNITION WERE FIRED DURING THE EVENING OF 5 SEP. IN ADDITION, 3 OPP CRUISERS HAD ROCKS THTOWN AT THEM. THE OPP IS OCCUPYING A ROAD BLOCK TO WARN DRIVERS OF VEHICLES ENTERING THE AREA.
